This marks the third time Meyer has left his job since 2009.

The university announced the decision today but did not say why he was leaving after seven years at the Big Ten school, where he has an 82-9 record. He returned to coach the Gators in 2010 before resigning at the end of the year. But Meyer spun them around and gave them eight wins during his first season and another nine wins the following season.

Ohio State was scheduled to live-stream a news conference at 2 p.m. officially announcing Meyer's retirement and the introduction of coach Ryan Day.

Meyer insisted he was going to coach beyond 2018 but more recently he had been noncommittal on his coaching future. He lost star defensive end Nick Bosa to an early season-ending injury, and the Buckeyes' defense never fully recovered. The stress involved in coaching exacerbates the headaches he experiences.

Meyer, who is 54, previously stepped away to deal with his health at Florida, only to return.

"When recruits started asking me if I will be here in four or five years", Meyer said during a press conference about factors that pushed him toward making a decision. Meyer was succinct in his response.

Ohio State had just hung 62 points on MI and Urban Meyer remained ideal against his program's most bitter rival, so you wouldn't expect the reality of his situation to hit him as he was swimming through fans on the Ohio Stadium turf.

"I plan on coaching", he said on October 29. Meyer ultimately was suspended for the Buckeyes' summer program and the first three games of the 2018 season. He's not coming to a Group of 5 program or a middling program with no track record of success. Afterward, he served as an assistant coach for more than a decade before finally landing a head coaching position at Bowling Green. He is an Ohio State guy to the core. He would be able to recruit the best athletes from one of the more talent-rich states and bring FSU back to competing with Clemson for ACC supremacy and playoff berths. A long resume of turning teams around, championships at two schools, and a highly praised coaching career at Ohio State made him one of the highest-paid football coaches. Especially considering the Huskies' season-opening loss to Auburn, which finished fifth in the SEC West and had one of the worst records in SEC play (3-5), ended up as a major stain. Like that team, this one is guided by a fourth-year starting quarterback in Jake Browning, who recently became the Pac-12's all-time winningest quarterback and ranks sixth in career passing yards.
