Sir David Attenborough at COP24: Collapse of Human Civilization on the Horizon

Nations must triple efforts to achieve Paris climate goals: Study World urged to tackle 'urgent threats' as UN climate talks begin
Kristine Garrett | 05 December, 2018, 23:47

Veteran British nature-documentary broadcaster David Attenborough warned that both civilisation and the natural world are on the brink of collapse, as world leaders prepare to gather in Poland for the United Nations climate summit.

"At the upcoming summit, we expect G20 countries to demonstrate their commitment to the Paris Agreement and to taking the necessary action to limit warming to 1.5°C, including by moving forward with the Hamburg Climate and Energy Action Plan from previous year".

The 2015 accord set a goal of keeping average global temperature increases well below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) by the end of the century.

To maximise the chances of success in Poland, technical talks began on Sunday, a day early, with delegates from almost 200 nations debating how to meet the Paris target of limiting global warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius and, ideally, aim for a safer 1.5 deg C, which would limit the damage from weather extremes and rising sea levels.

"Ireland is fully committed to the implementation of the Paris Agreement".

Collected using the #TakeYourSeat hashtag, millions of people from around the world were invited to share their stories about climate change and the impact it has had on them, their families, their health, and their communities.

Negotiators from countries around the world are in Poland for the annual UN Climate Change Summit which runs until December 14.

.

He told the delegates that "Climate change is running faster than we are and we must catch up sooner rather than later before it is too late. For many, people, regions and even countries this is already a matter of life or death".

He has also moved to withdraw the US from the Paris pact.

"These guidelines need to push countries to immediately cut emissions to achieve the 1.5°C temperature goal and to deal with growing climate impacts".

The Polish leader said participants at the conference backed his country's proposal of a "just transition" away from coal mining, which called for helping people like coal miners who were slated to lose their jobs as the world changed its energy mix.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has asked decision-makers to focus on four key things - a solid plan, stepping up climate action, more funding and smart investment in the future of the planet.

FILE - President Donald Trump stands next to the podium after speaking about the US role in the Paris climate change accord in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, June 1, 2017.

He told reporters that the reality of global climate change has been "worse than expected, but the political will is relatively faded after Paris" and not matching the current challenges.

"This is a very, very important conference", Patricia Espinosa, the UN's climate chief, said.

The United States, meanwhile, reiterated at the G20 summit in Argentina on Saturday its decision to withdraw from the Paris accord and Its commitment to all energy sources.

Guterres urged developed nations to deliver on this commitment, while urging Member States "to swiftly implement the replenishment of the Green Climate Fund".

And researchers have also found that climate change is contributing to the destruction of some of the world's most vulnerable natural habitats and is compounding natural disasters, like hurricanes, by increasing rainfall.
