Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are remembering former U.S. President George H.W. Bush, who paid a number of trips to the province on fishing expeditions.

Mr Bush, who served with distinction as an aviator in World War 11, lived a long and fruitful life that was exemplified by service to his country serving as a Congressman, Diplomat, Intelligence Head and as Vice President under President Ronald Reagan before ascending to his country's highest office.

The coffin will be flown from Texas to DC on board Air Force One - temporarily renamed Special Air Mission 41, in homage to the late president - and then back on Wednesday, with Sully accompanying the body throughout.

On Sunday, students, staff and visitors had flocked to Bush's presidential library on the campus of Texas A&M University, with thousands of mourners paying their respects at a weekend candlelight vigil at a nearby pond and others contributing to growing flower memorials at Bush statues at both the library and a park in downtown Houston.

Bush died at his Houston home on Friday night at the age of 94, seven months after the death of his wife, Barbara. Pence recalled that he recently asked Bush to sign a photo for his son, who made his first tailhook landing as a Marine aviator on the USS George H.W. Bush.

Family members, former Bush cabinet members, and senators and representatives gathered to mourn Bush. He will be honored during several private and public events in Houston and Washington before he is buried in Texas next to his wife, Barbara, and their young daughter Robin, who died in 1953. Bush's body will remain there in the rotunda, where the public can pay their respects from Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. ET until Wednesday morning at 8:45 a.m.

"President Bush has left us for one last flight but his destination isn't unknown", tweeted Schwarzenegger.

Asked about his call on Saturday with President Trump, he said it was a brief, but pleasant conversation.

He failed to win a second term after breaking a no-new-taxes pledge, losing to Democrat Bill Clinton.
