UEFA announce third European club competition to be introduced in 2021

Uefa confirms new Europa League 2 UEFA announce third European club competition to be introduced in 2021

UEFA have approved the creation of a third-tier UEFA club competition on Sunday, a tournament which will mirror the current Champions League and Europa League format, beginning in 2021.

UEFA will fast-track the implementation of Video Assistant Referees for the knockout stages of its Champions League this season, its president Aleksander Ceferin said on Monday.

UEFA originally opted against using VAR this season despite it being used by most major European leagues and Federation Internationale de Football Association at the World Cup in Russia, but hinted earlier this month it could be introduced ahead of schedule.

It will ensure that at least 34 countries will be represented in UEFA club competitions, compared to today's total of 26.

That process is repeated in the UEL2 with the eight second-placed teams from the group stage meeting the eight third-placed teams in the Europa League for a place in the last 16.

UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, has always been a champion of the use of technology to assist officials, however he wanted every piece of information on the system before permitting it to be used in the governing body's primary competition.

However, the new competition is created to appease those further down the food chain unhappy at changes to guarantee English, Spanish, German and Italian clubs 16 of the 32 places available in the Champions League.

UEL2 games will be played on Thursday nights - like the Europa League - with the intention of giving more countries the chance to be represented in European club competitions.

Before the last 16 an additional knockout round will be played between the second-place finishers in the group stage and the sides who finish third in their respective Europa League groups.

"There was a widespread demand by all clubs to increase their chances of participating more regularly in European competition", Ceferin said.

As revealed by SPORT a few days ago, UEFA have planned an intensive course to prepare the 17 referees who are now working in leagues which don't use the technology.
