Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt, left, in conversation with New Zealand head coach Steve Hansen ahead of the Autumn International match between Ireland and New Zealand at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Joe Schmidt sees Ireland's victory over Argentina as another test passed as the overcame a physical Pumas side in a closely-fought encounter.

Scrum-half Murray has not played since injuring his neck on Ireland's summer tour of Australia, but could yet face the All Blacks in Dublin on Saturday.

Alongside the likes of Crusaders coach Scott Robertson and All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster, Schmidt is a hot favourite to possibly replace Hansen after next year's World Cup in Japan, even earning a strong endorsement from Richie McCaw last week.

"Conor (Murray) is a world-class player and the guys behind him are chasing, but I think they did well at the weekend".

New Zealand boss Steve Hansen has previously joked it could have been an "Irish trick" to leave Murray out of the autumn squad, given the Munster star has already been back in training.

"There's no compulsion for him to force himself into the frame unless he's super comfortable".

'We talked about last week being a big game ... "He just rolled his ankle a little bit, so hopefully he will bounce back and be ready to go next week".

"Because the injury itself has gone really well".

"Everybody sits there hoping one day he'll come back and put himself back in the mix in New Zealand and we get the benefit of all the experience he's had at an global level and obviously quite a few years successfully at club level as well".

The All Blacks coach isn't prone to building the hype and with it heaping the external pressure on his players, so it was intriguing to hear him say this game was a "winner takes all" clash.

"I think we won in 2013 after the bell and then in Chicago, they won, and we had to work really hard the next time". But we'd be relatively confident he'd be okay.

Gritty Leinster flanker O'Brien has battled serious shoulder and knee issues in the a year ago, and now faces possibly at least six more weeks on the sidelines.

Ireland centre Robbie Henshaw will also miss the Tests with New Zealand and the United States after suffering a hamstring strain while warming-up shortly before kick-off against the Pumas last Saturday. "I needed to get 80 minutes under my belt", explained Leavy. So, with that prediction, it puts them into the mix [for New Zealand] for sure.
