The World's Smelliest Fruit Grounded an Entire Plane in Indonesia

In some Asian countries, Durians are banned from public transport and hotels due to their pungent smell.

As they protested for the removal of what is considered by some a delicacy, and by others a cheese-smelling fruit, passengers reportedly referred to a 2005 crash of a Mandala Airlines plane in Medan, which killed 149 people.

South-east Asia's most divisive fruit managed to ground a plane earlier this week, when passengers refused to fly with two tonnes of it in the cargo hold. That took nearly an hour and 2 tons were removed, but at the end of it, the plane took off from Bengkulu in Sumatra.

Passengers refused to board the plane and complained to staff about the fruit's strong smell.

Footage posted by a passenger on Facebook showed passengers watching as the fruit was unloaded.

A reporter with the Indonesian media group Antara, who happened to be on the plane, said passengers became agitated upon encountering the scent of durian wafting through cabin before takeoff.

But Zidane said that despite the complaints, the pilot had decided the fruit - the smell of which some find nauseating - would remain stored in the cabin during the flight.

Sriwijaya attempted to rationalize the airline's decision to take on two tons of the cargo by pointing out no laws were broken.

In a press statement after the Monday incident, Sriwijaya spokeswoman Retri Maya said that carrying durian fruit did not violate any flight regulations.

The company went on to say that it was normal practice for Indonesian airlines to carry durian in the hold, "as long as [the durian] is packed well and enclosed in the cargo according to standard operating procedure".

Eventually, they were all asked to leave the plane while the crew unloaded the durian.

The head of Bengkulu airport, Anies Wardhana told local news outlet Detik the airport would "evaluate" future packing situations so that they would "not cause passenger discomfort".
