A man-eater tigress Avni was killed in Yavatmal district forest of Maharashtra, news agency ANI reported.

The Supreme Court had issued a hunting order for T1 in September, ruling that she could be killed if tranquilisers failed. Avni is survived by her two cubs who are 10 months old.She was shot dead by sharp-shooter Asgar Ali, son of famous sharp-shooter Nawab Shafat Ali, at compartment no 149 of Borati forest under the jurisdiction of the Ralegaon police station.

For almost three months, equipped with the latest technology, 150 ground personnel, elephants and so-called expert trackers and shooters were on a quest to find Avni. "The tigress died on the spot", the release said.

No previous government has worked with the kind of "depth and seriousness" this dispensation has, Union environment minister Harsh Vardhan said on Monday as he hit back at Congress president Rahul Gandhi's barb at the Centre over the killing of tigress Avni.

Animal rights body PETA India Saturday said the killing of a tiger as part of an operation in Maharashtra should be investigated and treated as a wildlife crime and termed it a "dark day" for the nation.

'But she charged at the team, forcing Ashgar to shoot in self-defence, ' he said.

Wildlife officials said wild animals usually stray into residential areas in search of food.

They also rejected the government's argument that Avni was rightly classified a man-eater because she devoured 60 per cent of the humans she allegedly killed. According to reports, Maharashtra forest officials used a bottle of Calvin Klein Obsession cologne scent near camera traps to lure the dreaded animal, the tigress reportedly killed 14 people, to a place where they can surround her and finally they succeeded in their attempt.

The forest department outlined the course of events in a press release.

"In a reflex action of self-defense, the shooter fired from a distance of 8 to 10 meters".

Avni, identified as T1, was considered responsible for the killing of at least 13 humans, though all deaths could not be linked to her after tests, according to experts.

He made the statement after Union minister Maneka Gandhi criticised him and his Maharashtra government for the "ghastly murder" of Avni, saying a shooter who was sent behind bars for illegally supplying arms to "anti-nationals" was sent to kill the animal. She also vowed to take up the case "legally, criminally as well as politically". She is, however, Minister for Women and Child Development.

Her remains have reportedly been taken to a zoo to be autopsied.
