Private messages from 81000 hacked Facebook accounts for sale

Private messages of 81,000 Facebook users leaked online Hackers Published Private Messages From 81,000 Facebook Users

According to a BBC News report, hackers appear to have compromised and published private messages from at least 81,000 Facebook users' accounts.

The hackers said they obtained the information through a browser extension.

The hackers told the BBC that 120 million users, 2.7 million of which were Russian, had had their accounts hacked.

For thousands - and potentially millions - of Facebook users, correspondence sent in confidence via the social network's private messages platform have proven to be anything but. The latter could simply have been gathered via a lack of privacy settings, but this has yet to be confirmed.

The other key difference between the two hacks are the targets: the personal information that was stolen seemed primarily to focus on American accounts while the more recent browser hack targeted users living in Ukraine and Russian Federation.

Facebook maintains that its security has not been compromised and that the data in question had probably been obtained through malicious browser extensions.

The incident was first highlighted in September when a user with name FBSaler posted a message on an online forum: "We sell personal information of Facebook users".

Facebook became aware of the website hawking information from user accounts and started investigating about a month ago. Compromised data reportedly included chats about a recent Depeche Mode concert, complaints about a son-in-law, intimate conversations between lovers, and photos of a recent holiday as well. Facebook also added that it had taken steps to prevent further accounts being affected.

Digital Shadows also confirmed that data from a further 176,000 accounts was accessible although apparently some of that information, which included email addresses and phone numbers, could have been scraped from members that had not hidden it on their profile.

According to The Information, Facebook is in talks to buy a major cybersecurity company to help protect users.

Rosen also suggested people check any browsers extensions they've installed and "remove any that they don't fully trust". In total, the hackers made off with the details of over 120 million accounts.
