When Steve Jobs took a swipe at Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle in 2009, he pointed to the online retailer's decision not to report unit sales of its reading device as evidence it wasn't selling many.

While values have staged a recovery of sorts in recent days, Apple's share price remains largely unaffected and is 31% up on the year so far. Apple suppliers declined after the report. As a point of reference, analysts on Wall Street were anticipating revenue to fall in the $61.59 billion range with EPS to fall around $2.78. Analysts were looking for $92.7 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Chief executive Tim Cook said that Apple is "seeing some macroeconomic weakness in some of the emerging markets" such as Turkey, India, Brazil and Russian Federation.

One major announcement made by Apple in the earnings call is that the Cupertino company will not reveal its unit sales for iPhone, iPad, and Mac from next quarter onwards. That sparked concern Apple wants to avoid disclosing weak growth numbers. The company sees Q1 gross margin 38-38.5 percent. This is because, since the iPhone 8, all devices that Apple has released have all been priced high. Last month the shares were changing hands for $233. The period included about a week and a half of sales of the high-end iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max models, which cost as much as US$1,449. However, revenue from the handsets was up 29 percent to $37.2 billion, thanks to the iPhone's average selling price jumping from $618 to $793.

For as long as anyone can remember, every three months, Apple has told the world how many iPhone, iPads and Mac computers it has sold. With a starting price of US$749, it's expected to be a popular holiday gift, luring owners of older iPhones to upgrade. Excluding a one-time favorable adjustment of $640 million recognized in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2017, Services revenue grew from $7.9 billion in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2017 to $10 billion in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2018, an increase of 27 percent.

Instead, Apple continues to try to focus investors on the strong sales growth for supplementary services, including Apple Music, Apple Pay and iCloud. The company is working on digital newspaper subscriptions and original video content for next year.

Fourth-quarter revenue rose 20% year over year to $62.9 billion, led by the iPhone unit. Earnings per share came in at $2.91, topping the average estimate of $2.79 among analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research.

The technology giant's revenue for the last three months was 62.9 billion dollars (£48.4 billion) - up 20% on the same period previous year - with a profit of 14.1 billion dollars (£10.8 billion).

Apple skidded 6.6 per cent to close at $207.48.
