Sensor failure led to Soyuz launch failure, says Roscosmos

Russian official says Soyuz rocket failure caused by an errant sensor Crew, including Canadian, could be heading to space station Dec. 3: Russian officials

Russia's space agency suspended all manned space launches after an October 11 rocket failure forced a Soyuz capsule with two astronauts on board to make an emergency landing.

Thankfully, the two men onboard - Alexey Ovchinin and Nick Hague - survived without injury and landed on the ground in Kazakhstan.

Krikalyov did not explain what caused the sensor to malfunction but said the agency was working to prevent the issue on future flights.

In Roskosmos claim that the cause of the accident during the launch of the carrier rocket "Soyuz-FG" was abnormal operation of the sensor indicating the separation of the first and second stages of the carrier.

The accident was the first serious launch problem experienced by a manned Soyuz space mission since 1983, when a crew narrowly escaped before a launchpad explosion.

One of the side boosters was inaccurately attached to the rocket, the head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin said, commenting on the probe and adding that the assembly specialists violated some procedures in the process that eventually led to the abortive launch.

During the aborted launch, Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin and U.S. astronaut Nick Hague made an emergency landing and escaped unharmed.

The Russian rocket that carried two people to space last month failed and sent the craft back to Earth because of "deformation" of a part that was made during assembly at the cosmodrome, a space official said on November 1.

The rocket producer will also take apart two other rockets that have been recently assembled and are due to launch in the coming weeks and then re-assemble them, as they might have the same defect, Skorobogatov said. More recently, Russia's space program has been dogged by a string of failed satellite launches involving unmanned vehicles.

The next manned mission to the International Space Station may launch on December 3, state news agency TASS cited Russian space agency Roscosmos as saying on Wednesday.

The current ISS crew, the ESA's Alexander Gerst, NASA's Serena Aunon-Chancellor, and Roscosmos' Sergey Prokopyev, are expected to return to Earth around December 20, a week after their originally-scheduled December 13 descent.

Krikalyov added that the astronauts now on the ISS are expected to land on Earth "around December 20".
