Federer begins road to 100 with Paris win

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic Nadal and Djokovic met in this year's Wimbledon semi-final
Noah Ferguson | 02 November, 2018, 20:47

During his match in the hard-court tournament, the world No. 7 fired eight aces, compared to his rival's seven.

"Reflecting on what I've been through in the previous year, it's quite a phenomenal achievement", said Djokovic after making the quarter-finals in Paris when Bosnian opponent Damir Dzumhur retired trailing 6-1, 2-1. Roger Federer won 6-4, 6,3.

Fognini had broken back, halving the deficit with a fine backhand down the line, before squandering two break points as Federer was allowed to serve out the set. "If I can do well here in Paris and beat (Djokovic), all the better", Federer said.

Wimbledon and US Open champion Djokovic is now playing at the Paris Masters and cruised through to the quarter-finals, where he will meet Marin Cilic.

Talking about his chances of playing in the season-ending ATP Finals in London in November, he said, 'I would love to be in London, of course, ' added that the most important thing for me is to be healthy and have the chance to compete weeks in a row.

Djokovic ranked as lowly as 22nd earlier this year, before bouncing back strongly since the Wimbledon, winning 29 of his last 30 matches through to Thursday.

It will be the first time in two years that Djokovic, 31, will lead the rankings.

World number three Federer beat Italian Fabio Fognini 6-4 6-3 in one hour and 13 minutes.

"It would not be fair to say it's a real injury today but what is sure, if I continue it will be a real injury", he said.

"You can't expect too much from a third round but for us basically a first round", Federer said.

"He has a big serve and big game from back of the court".

Federer continued his momentum for another break midway through the second set, before sealing his quarterfinal spot 6-3 following Fognini's double faults.

John Isner, however, is set to miss the Finals after losing to Karen Khachanov in a tussle featuring two tie-breaks in nearly two and a half hours.

John Isner's hopes of also making the London finals received a potentially fatal blow when he was beaten 6-4 6-7 (9) 7-6 (8) in by rising Russian Karen Khachanov.

Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic met in the Paris final in 2015, the only all-Big 4 championship match there.

Fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev saved all four break points he faced in beating Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 6-2.

If he wins against Nishikori, he could face Novak Djokovic in the semifinals - but Federer is thinking more about winning the ATP Finals.

Sock goes up against Dominic Thiem on Friday after the 2018 French Open finalist edged Borna Coric 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 7-5.
