With the absence of Nadal from the tournament, Serbian Novak Djokovic, now world No. 2, is set to take the top spot of the ATP rankings, to be released on Monday.

Rafael Nadal announced on October 31 that he will not be able to compete at the Paris Masters tennis tournament due to a niggle in his abdominal muscles.

Nadal was forced to withdraw from his US Open semi-final against Juan Martin del Potro in early September with a knee injury.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the investigation needs to be completed swiftly and wants an extradition request for 18 suspects detained in Saudi Arabia to be put on trial in Istanbul.

Nadal's withdrawal shortly before his match against fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco means Djokovic will overtake him when the new ATP rankings are published on Monday.

Federer, 37, is chasing his 100th career title and will now begin his Paris campaign in the third round on Thursday against either Fabio Fognini or Marton Fucsovics.

The win improved the Croatian's prospects of making the ATP Finals in London starting on November 11.

Nadal suggested he would seek more information, telling a press conference on the eve of tournament: "I had a commitment since one year ago".

"Hopefully I can travel with him a bit more next year, and for sure we're going to try to spend a lot more time together in the upcoming weekends and months".

"I feel like it's better for me to play matches rather than practice, and I think that's it. Of course I know, I'm aware of what's happening, and it's sad, of course".

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev has booked a second round berth at the Paris masters after beating Francis Tiafoe.

Seventh-seeded Kevin Anderson, the Wimbledon runner-up, got past Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3).

Dimitrov had 13 aces in a 7-6 (10), 6-4 win against Roberto Bautista Agut and Nishikori beat Adrian Mannarino of France 7-5, 6-4.

The world number two was almost broken when play resumed but served out for the match to win 7-5 6-1. Borna Coric was also a late victor over Daniil Medvedev.

For a chance to qualify for the Finals, Nishikori needs to reach the semifinals and Isner must advance to the final at the Paris Masters.
