Global wildlife population declined 60% since 1970: WWF

Humans are wiping out life of earth says WWF with many species in danger of disappearing Earth’s wildlife population declined by 60 per cent in 44 years: WWF

"A recent assessment found that only a quarter of land on Earth is substantively free of the impacts of human activities".

The report suggests that this generation may be the last who can can act to reverse the trend. It also says that nearly 301 mammal species are at the risk of getting extinct due to being hunted for food.

In a report, the charity says losses in vertebrate species - mammals, fish, birds, amphibians and reptiles - averaged 60% between 1970 and 2014.

Marco Lambertini, director general of the WWF, said: 'Our planet is at a crossroads and we have the opportunity to decide the path ahead. It also looked at the Species Habitat Index which measures changes in species distribution, the International Union of Conservation of Nature Red List Index tracking extinction risks, and the Biodiversity Intactness Index measuring community composition.

Measured by weight, or biomass, wild animals today only account for four per cent of mammals on Earth, with humans (36 per cent) and livestock (60 per cent) making up the rest.

While climate change plays a role in the loss of biodiversity, the report says the bigger culprit is runaway human consumption.

More species referenced in the report as those whose populations are in decline include black and white rhinos, polar bears, African grey parrots, hedgehogs, whale sharks, Bornean orangutans, puffins and the wandering albatross.

Tropical areas have seen the worst declines, with an 89% fall in populations monitored in Latin America and the Caribbean since 1970. Among the freshwater animal groups, the population seemed to drop by 83 percent globally.

Citing the data from WWF-India's report on Water Stewardship for Industries, it said 14 out of 20 river basins in India are already water stressed and will be moving to extreme water scarcity by 2050.

"For the 2018 report, 319 new species have been added to the Living Planet Index database", Colby Loucks, deputy goal lead and senior director at the WWF Wildlife Conservation Program, told weather.com. At the same time, we are shoving many species, plant, and animal, to extinction.

"With the upcoming European Union elections and the resulting renewal of key decision-making bodies, Europe has the opportunity to revive its global leadership on climate change and nature conservation", Asin said. Human wealth and GDP is also increasing. "The decline of species and damage to the natural systems we all depend on will ultimately have negative impacts on our health, societies and economies".

Current action to protect nature fails to match the scale of the threat facing the planet, the conservationists claim.

"Decades of documented declines show us that we won't see wildlife recovery unless we all make it a priority - in all facets of our lives", said Megan Leslie, WWF-Canada president and CEO, in a release.

"The nature conservation agenda is not only about securing the future of tigers, pandas, whales, and all the incredible diversity of life we love and cherish on Earth", according to WWF International's Lambertini.
