PM Unveils Sardar Patel's 2900-Crore Statue Of Unity

"Remembering the architect of unity", said the headline in the Hindi-language Dainik Jagran newspaper for Modi's essay.

The "Statue Of Unity", the world's tallest statue dedicated to Indian independence leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, stands overlooking the Sardar Sarovar Dam near Vadodara in India's western Gujarat state on October 30, 2018.

In Chennai, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman flagged off the "Run for Unity" event. He also administered unity pledge to the participants.

It is said that Surya Kiran of the IAF will perform aerobatics in the sky over Patel's statue while spreading the colours of Tricolour in the sky. "He saved India from balkanisation... today, we, the 130 crore Indians, are working shoulder to shoulder to build a new India that is strong, prosperous and inclusive".

The imposing monument, touted as the world's tallest statue, is twice the height of Statue of Liberty and is built on an islet, Sadhu Bet, near the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Narmada district. "We would have needed visa to visit these states", the Minister said.

The committee overseeing the construction of the project reportedly also asked for public donations to finish the statue and called on farmers across the country to donate iron.

Mr Patel was a nationalist leader and he went on to become India's first interior minister and deputy prime minister under Jawaharlal Nehru.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the "statue of unity" would serve as a major tourist attraction.

HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, Science and Technology Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, Minister for Sports, Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore, Sports legends Zafar Iqbal, Karnam Malleshwari, MC Mary Kom, Dipa Karmakar were also present on the occasion. Since nothing has happened yet, they are planning a protest during the unveiling of Patel's statue and have even threatened to drown themselves during it. He is also credited for leading the struggle for India's Independence from the front. Reports said that PM Modi will be welcomed by the bands of the Armed Forces, Gujarat Police, SRP, CRPF and BSF, and cultural troupes from 29 States and two Union Territories.

The Ministry of Railways will organise pledge and March Past at its Zonal and Divisional Headquarters. "This award is given by Food and Agriculture Organisation, which comes the United Nations".

The Ministry of Culture will organise activities including essay, quiz competitions, lectures and symposium at Sahitya Academy and other programmes at Zonal Cultural Centres. "I urge you to participate in the largest possible numbers in this run for unity".
