They said the unidentified child who died Saturday evening at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell was "medically fragile", CBS News reported.

The patient was one of 25 sickened by an outbreak of a respiratory virus called adenovirus, which swept through Wanaque between September 26 and October 22, mainly affecting patients in the pediatric ventilator unit. Twenty-five children have been sickened in the outbreak, as has one staff member at the facility.

The department can not confirm that the death of an individual who died Friday afternoon was related to the outbreak, officials said.

Each of those who became ill had "severely compromised immune systems" before they got sick, and ranged in age from toddlers to young adults.

A ninth person has died at a pediatric rehabilitation center amid an outbreak of a respiratory virus, New Jersey health officials said.

The department said it is an active outbreak investigation and lab tests could confirm additional cases.

The Health Department says an inspection team found "minor handwashing deficiencies", and they continue to work closely with the nursing and rehab center on infection control issues.

The state Department of Health Communicable Disease Service has been on site monitoring the outbreak.

Both the staff at the facility as well as state authorities are continuous in the efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

This 1981 electron microscope image made available by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a group of adenovirus virions. Another death Friday of a medically frail resident has not been confirmed by laboratory results as being linked to the illness, according to the NJDOH.

Adenovirus is mild and feels like a cold or flu, experts say.

From 2003 through 2016, the two most commonly reported adenovirus types in the U.S. were types 2 and 3, though four additional types - 1, 4, 7 and 14 - also caused illness, according to a 2017 report from the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Disease of the CDC.
