White House to press forward with Trump's Space Command National Space Council gives plan on Space Force

The Trump administration in August announced an ambitious plan to usher in a new "Space Force" as the sixth branch of the military by 2020.

According to him, trump will soon ask the Congress to unite in one team of military and civilian experts in charge of security in space.

"I think we have a good chance next year of officially doing our Space Force", Trump told reporters in a brief interaction during a meeting with military officials on Tuesday.

With his demand that the Pentagon create a new military service - a Space Force to assure "American dominance in space" - President Donald Trump has injected urgency into a long-meandering debate over the best way to protect USA interests in space, both military and commercial.

Later Tuesday, the National Space Council, convened by the White House and chaired by the vice president, met at the National Defense University. "Our nation's Armed Forces have always been at the vanguard of advancing American leadership beyond the bounds of Earth, and the Space Force will ensure a new era of American supremacy in space".

A lack of centralized leadership and accountability threatened USA ability to "advance our national security in space", Pence said.

'The time has come to stop studying the problem and start fixing it, ' he said. The Air Force has estimated that Space Force could cost $3 billion in its first year and would likely need $13 billion in its first five years. He said that the national space Council referred the recommendations to the President.

The vice president explained that Trump has already set the ball rolling toward the goal of developing the Space Force by separating out a "chain of command for Space Force operations".

Critics, including some Democratic lawmakers, have said its creation is an unnecessary and expensive bureaucratic endeavor that would simply shift work already being done well by other services like the Air Force.

Pence noted that he hopes to secure congressional approval to create the Space Force before 2020.
