Dr. Jeremy Friedman, pediatrician-in-chief at the Hospital for Sick Children, wouldn't give an exact number, but said doctors at the Toronto hospital have seen less than 20 cases of limb-based paralysis since the beginning of September - with about a dozen of them confirmed as acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM. The average age of those affected is four years old and more than 90 percent of cases overall are in children under 18, Dr Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, told reporters in a media call on Thursday. Most of the confirmed cases nationally, including all those in OH, involve children.
The CDC said it also is testing specimens, including stool, blood and cerebrospinal fluid, from suspected AFM cases and working with healthcare providers, health departments, policymakers, the public and other partners to gather information on the condition.
Possible AFM causes include environmental toxins, genetic disorders, or viruses such as poliovirus, West Nile virus, or adenovirus. The neurological condition causes paralysis and weakness in limbs and is mostly diagnosed in children.
"We have [had] two patients we have treated in CHEO for [acute flaccid paralysis] since the summer", said Dr. Sunita Venkateswaran, a pediatric neurogologist with the children's hospital.
It starts out with symptoms similar to a common cold, but it could cause paralysis. The most severe symptom is breathing trouble.
Messonnier said other viruses besides EV-D68 have been found in patients with AFM. "What the physician will do is rule out other causes rule out other things that might be causing it".
While a lot is still unknown about the condition, CDC experts are looking to past outbreak patterns to try and predict when this one will hit its peak.
The CDC reports the odds of contracting AFM are less than one in a million.
"There are multiple different viruses that can cause this syndrome", Greenberg said. When it infects pregnant women, the Zika virus can go into the brains of the developing fetuses and cause permanent damage. Parents can also help protect their children by encouraging hand washing, staying up to date on recommended vaccines and using insect repellent to prevent mosquito bites.
