The state's Health Department says another 12 children are sick due to the outbreak of adenovirus.

The strain in the New Jersey outbreak is No. 7 and is affecting "medically fragile" children with severely compromised immune systems, according to the Health Department.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, type 7 is most commonly associated with acute respiratory disease.

"The facility has been instructed to not admit any new patients until the outbreak ends and they are in full compliance", the health department statement read. A team was sent back Tuesday.

More information about adenovirus is available on Health Canada's website.

Adenoviruses are responsible for about 10 percent of fever-related infections among United States children, and most children will have at least one type of infection by age 10.

Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement that he was "heartbroken" about the deaths and that he had been briefed by the health commissioner, Dr. Shereef Elnahal, who told him that the department is on site and trying to prevent the virus from spreading further.

"The NJ Department of Health was notified by the facility on October 9 of some respiratory illnesses", said Donna Leusner, a spokeswoman for the department.

A team from the health department is at the facility and an inspection team was there Sunday, as well. "The Wanaque Center continues to fully cooperate with these agencies and has sought out their medical guidance with respect to the virus". Unrelated Medicare investigations in 2017 and 2016 found "infection control" issues at Wanaque, including failing to properly clean and disinfect surfaces and objects inside the facility, improper storage of syringes and other tools and inadequate hand-washing practices.

Adenoviruses typically cause "mild illness" but the children affected are "medically fragile", officials say.
