Beyond the Weather: Orionid meteor shower

Oriniod meteor shower Oriniod meteor shower

This year's shower will peak during the evening of October 21.

The Orionids will peak late Sunday night into early Monday morning across the Delaware Valley.

At its peak, the shower usually produces between 10 and 20 meteors per hour.

The almost full moon will be shining brightly in the sky for most of the night, making it harder to see some of the dimmer meteors, but it will not ruin the celestial show completely.

The skies need to be clear too, with very little or no cloud cover.

At its peak, you will see up to 25 shooting stars per hour - although this is dependent on flawless conditions. "This comet leaves debris in its wake that strikes Earth's atmosphere most fully around October 20-22, while Earth intersects the comet's orbit, as it does every year at this time". This meteor shower will be visible from everywhere on planet Earth, and you can best spot meteors between midnight and dawn if you find Orion the Hunter in the sky and look slightly to the north of Orion's sword.

The Orionid meteors are named as such because they appear to spring from around the constellation Orion.

The Orionids meteor shower occurs in the autumn months every year.
