In late September or early October, a Florida child who hadn't received the flu shot died, according to Florida's Department of Health.

Children under five, older adults, those who are pregnant and those with underlying health conditions are at greater risk from the flu, the health unit said.

Orlando Health reports 53% believe flu vaccines can cause children to get sick with flu while 34% believe the flu vaccine doesn't work.

30 percent of the respondents thought flu shot is a conspiracy. Despite pleas from health officials to get the shot, about 58 percent of children ages 6 months to 17 got it last season, down two percentage points from 2015-16, the federal government said.

The Department of Health wants to make sure your children are healthy this year, by kicking off their annual, Stop Flu at School program.

"Any death, especially one in an unvaccinated child, is a somber reminder of the importance of flu vaccination and the potential seriousness of flu", CDC spokesperson Kristen Nordlund told weather.com.

After the worst flu season in decades previous year, Dr. John Cunningham of Comer Children's Hospital went so far to call it a "significant and national emergency". The vaccine is widely available at doctor's offices and pharmacies and it take a couple of weeks to build immunity to the flu and the flu season has started. "If you're pregnant get vaccinated, because it will protect you and it will help protect your baby when the baby's born".

The first Florida flu death of the season has been reported. Luckily, the CDC is predicting that this year's flu strain will be milder than last year's. This is especially crucial because babies under the age of six months can not get flu shots.

"The influenza vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your family from becoming ill with influenza", said Deputy Secretary for Public Health Services Fran Phillips, RN, MHA. It is the most effective tool we have.

Signs of the flu include fever that lasts 3-4 days, body aches, chills, tiredness, cough, and headache.
