Because no common supplier has been found, the CDC can not steer people away from any particular source of raw chicken.

There have been 92 reported cases of Salmonella Infantis in 29 states, including California, Washington and Texas, according to the CDC report announced Wednesday.

The agency said this strain "is resistant to multiple antibiotics" and has not yet been linked to one specific supplier of raw chicken.

The CDC said it was working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and representatives from the chicken industry to discuss steps that they might take to reduce Salmonella contamination. However, diarrhea for some people may be so severe that they need to be hospitalized.

The CDC cautioned doctors that this strain resists the effects of common antibiotics, and said numerous patients also had urinary tract infections.

- There is an outbreak of drug-resistant salmonella in 29 states including NY and New Jersey.

Symptoms, which typically begin 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria, include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps and can last four to seven days. Don't wash chicken before you cook it, as doing so can spread germs to other surfaces.

Lab evidence found that many types of raw chicken products - including raw chicken pet food and live chickens - resulted in people becoming sick, officials said.

This outbreak is a reminder to follow food safety guidelines.

The good news is that all chicken is safe to eat once it has been thoroughly cooked. It is also suggested you don't feel raw diets to pets.

The CDC is advising people to wash kitchen counters and cutting boards to prevent the spread of salmonella.

The investigation is ongoing and CDC will provide more information as it becomes available.
