Thousand-Strong Migrant 'March' Walking Toward US Border

Hondurans Challenge President Trump's Tough Immigration Stance With 'March of the Migrant' Event Hondurans Challenge President Trump's Tough Immigration Stance With 'March of the Migrant' Event

"The United States has strongly informed the President of Honduras that if the large Caravan of people heading to the U.S.is not stopped and brought back to Honduras, no more money or aid will be given to Honduras, effective immediately!" he said.

Back in April, a "caravan" of immigrants marching across Central America toward the USA border drew the attention of President Trump.

A group estimated at 1,600 to 2,000 people hoping to arrive in the USA marched from Honduras into Guatemala Monday, fleeing violence and poverty in their home country.

An estimated 1,300 men, women and children have begun the long march from Honduras north through Guatemala and Mexico, to what they hope will be a successful crossing of the border into the United States.

After reports indicated that a caravan of more than a thousand migrants from Honduras were travelling to the US border in hopes of obtaining refugee status, the president spoke out against their trek.

"He keeps the country mired in poverty and corruption", she said.

Many carried only a few belongings in backpacks and bottles of water.

"We are not criminals - we are migrants", she said. Some pushed strollers or carried toddlers on their shoulders. The caravan eventually passed without incident.

Guatemalan police officers detained Bartolo Fuentes, a former member of the Honduran Congress, from the middle of a large crowd he and three other organizers had led from San Pedro Sula, Honduras, since Saturday, bound for Mexico.

Local media coverage prompted hundreds more to join during the weekend as the group moved toward Guatemala.

The same sort of march occurred in April, when some 1,500 people from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador marched to the USA border. While I can certainly understand the motivation, the problem for the U.S.is that there are another 9 million people in Honduras who probably want the same thing, given a choice.

The mass throng on Monday crossed into Guatemala after a standoff with police in riot gear and amid a from the Trump administration that they should not attempt to enter the United States illegally.

Mexico's migration institute said in a statement on Monday that march participants would need to follow immigration rules to enter the country, without specifying the criteria.

Honduras is largely dominated by murderous gangs that prey on families and businesses, and routinely sees homicide rates that are among the highest in the world.
