Singapore Airlines Ready To Take Off World's Longest Flight Of 19 Hours Longest ever direct flight lands at Newark Liberty Int'l Airport

Singapore Airlines launched the world's longest commercial flight to NY on October 11 night with its Airbus A350-900 ULR taking off from the Changi International Airport.

The brand-new Airbus A350-900ULR will depart from Changi Airport and land in Newark's worldwide airport in New Jersey.

To make the almost 19-hour flight bearable, Singapore Airlines has opted for a cabin configuration with 94 premium economy seats and 67 business class seats.

At 4.35pm today (11.35pm in Singapore), Flight SQ22 will leave the tarmac at Changi Airport.

Chief executive Alan Joyce told media a year ago that a non-stop, 17,000-kilometre service from Sydney to London could be on the cards as soon as 2022 - but only if oil prices stay low enough to provide a decent return on the route.

Also near the top of the world's mega-flights, is the Philippine Airlines Manila to London service, which takes more than 15 hours.

"My cousin said 'hey, this is in the press.' I'm going to take pictures and show her", she said.

The plane also boasts of spacious "elegantly lit" interiors, higher-than-normal ceilings and wider seats aimed at reducing jet lag.

The other long-haul flights that are now in operation are: Perth to London (17-hour non-stop) thanks to Qantas launched earlier in the year and Auckland to Doha (17.5 hours) by Qatar Airways. On Tuesday, for instance, for travel between Mumbai and Newark in January 2019, Air-France offered the cheapest premium economy seat at Rs 1.12 lakh, for a 19-hour flight that transits through Paris. The return flight, SQ21 will depart a short time later at 10:45 a.m. and arrive back into Singapore at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow.

"The biggest concern is Deep Vein Thrombosis from a combination of sitting for too long and also from dehydration", Gail Cross, an associate consultant at the National University Hospital in Singapore.

Senior Singapore Airlines executive Campbell Wilson said the Airbus A350-900ULR consumes 25 percent less fuel than an older generation aircraft of the same size.

"Ultra-long haul services comprise an important component of that strategy", an airline spokesman told AFP.

Airbus developed the latest model for extra-long flights. "Currently, we have only a daily, non-stop flight from Singapore to San Francisco".

An Airbus A350-900ULR plane was used to make this nonstop journey. Six more are due for delivery by the end of the year.

SIA is offering new services to New York (Newark), San Francisco and Los Angeles, and in all, the airline will be operating 27 non-stop services each week from Singapore to the U.S. before the end of this year.
