President Donald Trump declared Friday the USA will uncover the truth about what happened to journalist and US resident Jamal Khashoggi, whose possible murder at Saudi hands after disappearing in Istanbul has captured worldwide attention.

Ms Cengiz had earlier called on President Trump to fully investigate her fiance's disappearance and Washington insiders claim the reported recording provides "persuasive and gruesome evidence" that he was murdered.

He said that, once it was clear what had happened to Mr Khashoggi, governments should decide "in the appropriate way" whether to attend an investment conference to be held in the Saudi capital Riyadh this month. In a clip broadcast on "CBS This Morning", Mr. Trump said there is a lot at stake "and maybe especially so because this man was a reporter".

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Washington was "looking for information" and wanted to understand the "realities" of what had happened.

Turkish officials say they have audio and video recordings that show a Saudi security team detained Khashoggi in the consulate before killing him and dismembering his body, the Post reported.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, top Turkish authorities have told USA news organizations that they believe Khashoggi was assassinated at the consulate on orders from Saudi Arabia's royal court.

The moments of his "interrogation, torture and killing were audio recorded and sent to both his phone and to iCloud", CNN quoted the privately-owned Sabah daily as saying.

Their arrival came a day after a senior Saudi royal figure, Prince Khaled al-Faisal, was said to have briefly visited Turkey amid signs that the Saudi monarchy was seeking an urgent solution to the diplomatic crisis between the two countries.

Abdulaziz also said "some media" have circulated "false accusations" regarding Khashoggi's disappearance.

Trump also said Saturday that "we would be punishing ourselves" by cancelling arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

She said Saturday marked the 60th birthday of Khashoggi and she had previously planned "a surprise party" in Istanbul by the Bosphorus.

Khashoggi, who was a USA resident, wrote columns for The Washington Post that were critical of Saudi Arabia.

A delegation from Saudi Arabia arrived in Turkey on Friday as part of an investigation into the writer's disappearance.

He urged it to do so and allow Turkish officials to enter the consulate.

He said he believed the legal system should be able to guarantee accountability, but added: "I must say I am feeling anxious [at] this apparent new normal".

"We are making sure Canadians' expectations and laws are always being followed", he said.

"Had I known it would be the last time I would see Jamal, I would have rather entered the Saudi consulate myself", she added.

Perhaps the most under-the-bullseye in this ugly story is Jared Kushner, who has played host to Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman.

With a Washington Post columnist's suspected murdered at the hands of Saudi Arabia, you would expect tough talk from the White House, sanctions, and a series of other gestures aimed at tampering down the tactic of assassinating unkind critics.
