A Russian Soyuz rocket carrying two crew members to the International Space Station malfunctioned shortly after launch early Thursday morning, forcing the space flyers to make an emergency return to Earth - what's known in aerospace circles as a ballistic re-entry.

Gerst tweeted his relief that the two astronauts were safe, saying the day's events "showed again what an fantastic vehicle the Soyuz is, to be able to save the crew from such a failure".

The Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft blasted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan at 4:40 AM EDT. "Teams are working with our Russian partners to obtain more information about the issue with the booster from today's launch", the agency said.

Search and rescue teams were deployed to the landing site.

The Soyuz MS-10 rocket had four first-stage boosters strapped to its central core, which housed the second stage booster.

The astronauts reported a brief period of weightlessness, then jettisoned back to Earth at a sharper angle than what is normal, putting Hague and Ovchinin under more than six times the force of gravity.

It was the latest in a recent series of failures for the Russian space program, which is also used by the U.S.to carry its astronauts to the station.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists: "Thank God the cosmonauts are alive".

NASA says it chose Hague as an astronaut in 2013 and completed training in 2015; he had been scheduled to perform at least two spacewalks as part of his mission on the space station.

Both the USA space agency NASA and Russia's Roscosmos reported that the two were quickly recovered from the landing area by rescue crews.

Kenny Todd, a space station manager, said the space station's current crew could only stay on board until January - just a month beyond their expected mid-December return.

As a result, Russian Federation has launched a criminal investigation into the rocket failure.

Russian space chief Dmitry Rogozin said he was forming a state commission to investigate what caused the failure.

The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, coordinated the launch, which had been planned for multiple years.

A United States astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut are alive after a failure during a mission to the International Space Station. Last year, NASA astronaut Jack Fischer and Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin shared a ride to ISS.

Glitches found in Russia's Proton and Soyuz rockets in 2016 were traced to manufacturing flaws at the plant in Voronezh.

"That means the crew will not be going to the International Space Station today".

Commander Alexander Gerst was ready to welcome two new astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) - but ended up looking on helplessly as a catastrophic rocket failure sent the incoming crew falling back to Earth.

Russia's Investigative Committee said a criminal probe would seek to determine whether safety regulations had been violated during construction, causing major damage.
