Fox & Friends Presses Trump on Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi

Turkish paper names 15 Saudis in Khashoggi case Erdogan, Trump step up pressure over missing Saudi journalist

The Saudi government maintains that they had nothing to do with Khashoggi's disappearance, and that the journalist left the consulate soon after he got there. Khashoggi supported efforts to nudge the entrenched ultraconservative clerics to accept reforms in the kingdom.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor who lived in the United States, vanished October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain a document needed to marry his Turkish fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, who waited for him outside.

CCTV released by Turkish TV showed a man believed to be Mr Khashoggi enter the consulate as well as a vehicle entering and leaving the building after he went inside.

The kingdom calls the allegation "baseless".

Surveillance footage released by the Turkish government shows Khashoggi entering the consulate, but they say there is no evidence he left afterward, leading Turkish officials to say they believe he was killed. Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said he was personally involved in the case, which threatens ties between Ankara and Riyadh.

Vice President Mike Pence expressed fresh concern Wednesday over the case Wednesday, saying "violence against journalists should be condemned" and that the USA may be prepared to send Federal Bureau of Investigation officials to help investigate the case.

According to the Post, the intelligence pointing to a plan to detain Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia has fueled speculation what actually transpired at the consulate was a plan to detain Khashoggi that went wrong.

The Washington Post reported that U.S. intelligence had intercepted communications of Saudi plans to kidnap Khashoggi, a critic of the kingdom and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman who fled into exile past year.

Asked about a Washington Post report that USA intelligence intercepts outlined a Saudi plan to detain Khashoggi, Trump said, "It would be a very sad thing and we will probably know in the very short future". Corker and Top Democrat Bob Menendez are triggering an investigation into his disappearance.

Prosecutors are investigating the incident, while the consulate said on Twitter it is working in coordination with Turkish authorities. Fully aware that the Saudi government did not take kindly to its critics, Khashoggi turned down this offer.

Erdogan said on Thursday, "If a bird flew, if a mosquito appeared, these systems would catch them, and [I believe] they [the Saudis] would have the most advanced of systems". There are also reports that Turkish intelligence is in possession of a video showing Khashoggi's murder. Although his opinions had angered certain people, he said, the tensions between himself and Saudi Arabia did not amount to hate, grudges or threats.

"That would be a very sad thing and we'll probably know in the very short future", the president responded.

US President Donald Trump says the US is looking into the fate of a Saudi writer missing and feared murdered but expressed reservations over calls to withhold further US arms sales to Saudi Arabia, warning that such a move "would be hurting us". These leaks, largely matching across Turkey's state-run media and private Erdogan-linked outlets, likely come from the country's security services as another means to pressure the kingdom over Khashoggi's October 2 disappearance. The reports did not cite a source and there was no official confirmation.

Information continues to trickle out through Turkish media about the 15-man Saudi team previously described as an "assassination squad".

When asked for video footage on Khashoggi, Saudi officials reportedly told Republican Sen.

Reporters Without Borders also called for an "independent global investigation" to be conducted in a statement issued on Wednesday.
