Deadly Michael weakens to tropical storm after epic destruction

A structure in Panama City Beach was no match for Michael's winds, as the home under construction collapsed an hour prior to the Category 4 storm's eyewall coming ashore.

Michael slammed into the Florida Panhandle Wednesday as the most powerful storm to strike the US mainland in 50 years.

Corelogic noted the compact nature of hurricane Michael, which will have limited the size of the swathe of damage on landfall, but the storm surge has impacted a wide area from Mobile, AL to Tampa, FL, with the maximum storm surge anticipated to be east of Panama City to coastal cities south of Tallahassee, the firm said.

Michael had weakened to a Category 1, with maximum winds of 90 miles per hour as of 8:00 pm Eastern time (0000 GMT), but that still left it an extremely unsafe storm.

"Panama City, I don't know if there will be much left", he added.

Michael, which had caught many by surprise with its rapid intensification as it churned north over the Gulf of Mexico, was the most powerful storm ever recorded to hit the Panhandle.

Until we have a much clearer picture of damage in the immediate landfall area, surge flooding along the coast to either side of that and the wind and flood damage further inland, the full size of the insurance and reinsurance industry loss remains hard to forecast.

A water-level station in Apalachicola, close to where Michael came ashore, reported a surge of almost 8 feet (2.5 meters).

"Human needs, there's going to be a lot", Maul said.

Mike Thomas, the mayor of Panama City Beach, a resort west of Panama City, said he expected there would be casualties and that emergency personnel would not go out when winds get over 80km/h. The storm is expected to hit many military-heavy areas that were just struck by Hurricane Florence.

"I'm anxious about my daughter and grandbaby".

Michael gained sudden force Tuesday night as it churned over the Gulf of Mexico.

Meteorologists said it had the potential to become one of the worst storms in the history of the region as they watched satellite imagery in complete awe while the storm intensified.

In 2016, Hurricane Matthew, which caused the deaths of almost 600 people in Haiti, quickly grew to a Category 5 storm with sustained winds up 165 miles an hour because of rapid intensification.

President Donald Trump issued an emergency declaration for Florida, freeing up federal funds for relief operations and providing the assistance of FEMA, which has more than 3,000 people on the ground. "I mean, literally, we follow it right in".

Looking at the entire hurricane season, Michael had the strongest winds since 1992 and Hurricane Andrew.

The National Hurricane Center forecasted that a few areas could see up to a foot of rain.

Rick Scott, the Florida governor, said on Twitter: "The time to evacuate has come and gone".

Hargan, a bartender at a riverfront restaurant, feared he would lose his home and his job to the storm.

Thousands of evacuees sought shelter in Tallahassee, which is about 25 miles from the coast but is covered by live oak and pine trees that can fall and cause power outages even in smaller storms.

Only a skeleton staff remains at the home of the 325th Fighter Wing after the base's aircraft, which include F-11 Raptors, were flown hundreds of kilometres away as a precaution.

"I'm freaking scared I'm going to lose everything I own, man."
