"And it is up to us to produce as many spaceships as we can to cater to that demand", he added.

"Soon after that we will send into space people, so we will have a very interesting few months ahead".

Speaking to CNBC, Mr Branson said Virgin Galactic is "more than tantalisingly close" to its first trip to space.

Virgin Galactic and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos have been in a closely contested battle to get the first fare-paying passengers into space. In 2014, an early version of a Virgin Galactic spacecraft pulled apart and crashed during a test flight over the Mojave, killing co-pilot Michael Alsbury.

A ticket into space on board a Virgin Galactic flight will be a costly £192,000 ($250,000) - but "ultimately" he would expect it to fall to £31,000 ($40,000) within a decade.

Sir Richard's space firm Virgin Galactic is now locked in a battle with Musk's rocket company SpaceX to be the first to send paying tourists into space.

Mr Branson said he will re-open the waiting list some time next year.

'He's got to find time for himself, he's got to find time for his health and for his family.

Asked in the interview whether he was confident enough people would pay for tickets, he told CNBC: "If I have a room full of 10 people, eight out of 10 would love to go to space if they could afford it".

"I think that learning the art of delegation better would be his one flaw", the billionaire founder of Virgin Galactic said of his SpaceX counterpart. And you know he's a wonderfully creative person.

He reached an agreement with United States regulators last month to step down as Tesla chair and pay a $20 million (£15 million) fine for what the Securities and Exchange Commission called "false and misleading" claims.

Virgin Galactic is not the only firm that hopes to make a business out of space tourism.

To reach the Karman line, a spaceship has to cruise at an altitude of 100 kilometers above sea level.

Meanwhile, another insurgent private space company, Blue Origin, founded by entrepreneur Jeff Bezos, just won the contract to provide its BE-4 engines to the behemoth United Launch Alliance.

A Virgin Galactic spacecraft can accommodate two astronauts who will pilot it, along with six paying passengers.
