Previously the company only advised users to not install the update.

Microsoft has paused the rollout of its latest Windows 10 update after users reported that photos and other personal files had been wiped without warning by the latest version of the operating system. Now, Microsoft has fixed the problem and explained what happened. If there are still files in the "Documents" folder then you're not affected by the issue, according to another tweet from Sarkar.

As I had speculated earlier, the problem also occurred on some systems that used the relatively new Auto Save feature in OneDrive to relocate the contents of the Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders to corresponding locations in the cloud. For example, an empty copy of the original C:\Users\Name\Downloads folder appeared. [.] Once we have confirmation that there is no further impact we will move towards an official re-release of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

Microsoft added code in the October 2018 update that would make sure these empty duplicate folders were removed.

"Prior to re-releasing the October 2018 Update our engineering investigation determined that a very small number of users lost files during the October 2018 Update", stated the Microsoft announcement. But we're shocked that Microsoft messed up in the first place.

If Microsoft's estimation of the percentage of affected users is accurate, it's likely that a few hundred people were affected by this bug.

Microsoft is now testing an updated version of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update that promises to fix a serious issue that led the company to pull the update following its public release last week. Microsoft retail stores will also try to help, and may be able to aid you in recovering your deleted files.
