Bulgaria Under Pressure after Journalist's Brutal Murder

In a recent program, she interviewed a Bulgarian journalist and one from Rise Romania, who had been temporarily detained in Bulgaria last month while conducting an investigation into a suspected EU-funds fraud.

No link has been established to Marinova's work, but her death has angered many in the Balkans country where people are frustrated with corruption and an inefficient judiciary that has been criticized by the European Commission.

A Romanian citizen detained as part of an investigation into the murder of Bulgarian TV journalist Viktoria Marinova was released without charge on Tuesday night.

Bulgarian Interior Minister Mladen Marinov insisted Monday there was no evidence to suggest the killing was linked to Marinova's work.

Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, said attacks on journalists erode fundamental human rights to freedom of expression and press. And Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said Sunday that authorities were working together alongside the "best forensics" team to solve the murder.

Ms Marinova recently hosted two journalists investigating the embezzlement of European Union funds on a television show called Detector.

In October, one of Malta's best-known journalists, Daphne Caruana Galizia, who had worked on the Panama Papers revelations, was killed after a bomb exploded in a rented auto she was using.

Authorities discovered the body of 30-year-old Viktoria Marinova on Saturday in the northern town of Ruse near the Romanian border.

Ms Marinova was a director of TVN, a small TV station, and a TV presenter for two investigative programmes.

He said Marinova was linked to bivol.bg's investigations because its reporters had appeared on her show.

But Bivol.bg owner Asen Yordanov said he had received credible information his journalists were in danger of being assaulted because of the investigation that featured on Ms Marinova's show.

Bulgaria was ranked 111 out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders world press freedom index this year, lower than any other European Union member.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has condemned the "brutal" killing of investigative reporter Victoria Marinova, declaring it as outrageous.

At the Ruse vigil, telecoms technician Venelin Rumenov, 27, told AFP: "I don't think that she had been threatened or anything". The journalist said he and his coworkers feared for their safety.
