Comedians have ridiculed the NSW government's plan to promote a horse race on the sails of the Sydney Opera House by projecting the words "Advertise here".

Betting on the race was also suspended in the hours from when the draw was held until the results being projected amid fears of a security breach.

Police in riot gear were in attendance as people began to filter into the areas surrounding the landmark ahead of the controversial illumination, which kicked off at 7.30pm on Tuesday night.

The Opera House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but has previously directed Reuters to the state government.

Protester Joshua Richardson, 19, said he had no problem with the Opera House being lit up in the "right context" but said this illumination was "horrible".

"They seem to think that horse racing is culturally below them". Trainer James Cummings will instead have stablemate Osborne Bulls take his place as the runner for slot holder, the Australian Turf Club.

The race is billed as the world's richest and has $13million in prize money up for grabs as well as a performance by former One Direction member Liam Payne.

He threatened her job live on air and told her she was "out of her depth", but Alan Jones still isn't convinced he bullied Opera House CEO Louise Herron last Friday.

Overnight the comedy group shared footage of some members driving around Sydney in a vehicle with a projector attached, projecting the words "Advertise Here: Call Alan" onto the NSW Art Gallery, Parliament House and the Opera House.

The team at The Chaser have responded to the controversy over the use of the Sydney Opera House as an advertising tool by projecting the phone number of conservative broadcaster Alan Jones onto the building's iconic sails.

Almost 3000 people are also expected to attend a protest at that time to disrupt the Everest projection with torches and mobile phone lights.

Jones offered an apology on Tuesday morning.
