Donald Trump: Sex assault claims against Brett Kavanaugh 'a hoax'

Hours prior to a ceremonial swearing-in of the newest U.S. Supreme Court justice, President Donald Trump accused opposition Democrats of already plotting to remove Brett Kavanaugh from the bench. Taking direct aim at Democrats, Kavanaugh asserted that the sexual abuse allegations of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford were an act of revenge on behalf of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

And he said that "under historic scrutiny", Kavanaugh was "proven innocent".

Midterm elections usually go badly for a sitting United States president's party but here too, Trump is a wildcard and the first signs are polls showing Republican strength in the Senate forecasts.

"I'm doing rallies and people are loving that man and loving that choice", he said while in Florida.

"Our Republican colleagues in the Senate should follow the rule they set in 2016", Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in June on the Senate floor.

"The tactics that have been employed both by Judiciary Committee Democratic senators and by the virtual mob that's assaulted all of us in the course of this process, has turned our base on fire", said McConnell.

Now, Halsted said, Collins' constituents are "ready to support a senator from Maine who is going to stand up for Mainers and do what's right for the country, regardless of political party-and I think people realize Susan Collins is not that senator".

Democrats fought tooth and nail to stop Kavanaugh's candidacy, claiming that the accomplished, conservative-minded judge was not suited to the Supreme Court, which will now tilt decisively to a more Republican-friendly panel.

In the aftermath of Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation as a justice, former Attorney General Eric Holder sent out a tweet saying the legitimacy of the Supreme Court can be "justifiably" questioned. "The American public has seen this charade, has seen this dishonesty by the Democrats".

Standing in front of his wife and two daughters, Mr Kavanaugh noted how the confirmation process was a contentious and emotional ordeal, but added: "I take this office with gratitude and no bitterness".

President Trump talks to reporters as he departs the White House in Washington on Monday.

"When he came back with such a forceful denial and the anger and anguish that he showed and then the lack of corroboration led me back to the fundamentals of our legal system: a presumption of innocence", Collins explained to CNN's "State of the Union".

In early 2016, McConnell refused to set hearings for President Barack Obama's last nominee, Judge Merrick Garland, saying the seat left open by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia should be filled by the victor of that year's election. 'And I think you're going to see a lot of things happen on November 6 that would not have happened before'. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who said she would be a no vote, voting present to make up for her Republican colleague Sen. "We all toughed it out together".

McConnell spoke to reporters in Louisville on Monday before traveling to Washington to attend a White House ceremony honoring the newly sworn-in Kavanagh.
