British street artist Banksy has stunned the art world with arguably his most audacious prank yet, self-destructing one of his best-known works moments after it fetched more than a million pounds at auction in London.

"Unlike the other editioned iterations of this famous motif, the present work is a rare unique painting that was given to the present owner by Banksy in 2006 following the artist's warehouse show, Barely Legal, in Los Angeles", Sotheby's said of the lot.

Girl With Red Balloon was one of the star attractions at Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Sale on Friday evening.

A million-dollar piece of artwork by mysterious street artist Banksy was left in shreds before an aghast audience seconds after it was auctioned off for a record $1.4 million Friday.

Banksy himself posted an Instagram picture of shocked onlookers watching the painting disintegrate, with the caption:"Going, going, gone".

Art prankster Banksy has struck again.

In August, he said he would never charge anyone to see his artworks after it emerged an unauthorised Banksy exhibition in Moscow was charging people £20 to get in. Sotheby's refused to reveal who had bought the piece before it was shredded. "We have not experienced a situation where a painting has spontaneously shredded, possibly at the request of the artist".

According to The Guardian, Sotheby's released a statement saying "We have talked with the successful purchaser who was surprised by the story".

He went on to tell The Associated Press that the auction house was in discussion about "next steps" with the buyer.

"Girl With Balloon" first appeared on a wall in Great Eastern Street, London.
