According to the union they hope the decision will "encourage student groups and societies to do the same, and to include BSL clapping as a part of inclusion training".

The student union said the wave, commonly referred to as "jazz hands", will make events more accessible and inclusive for people who have autism or are deaf.

However, the paper adds that a student from the university later appeared on ITV show Good Morning Britain denying that it is banned.

A British university has come under fire after its student union body passed a motion on Friday to replace clapping with the sign language applause known "jazz hands".

"This union notes that since 2015, the National Union of Students (NUS) has been using British sign language (BSL) clapping (or "jazz hands"), as loud noises, including whooping and traditional applause, can pose an issue for students with disabilities such as anxiety or sensory issues", the motion read, The Guardian reported.

Khan said that noisy clapping can "discourage" some people from showing up to democratic events and that the implementation of the jazz hands alternative would help to foster an environment of respect. "So little is done collectively, [and] nearly everything is always [done by] an individual with a disability who goes and seeks their private accommodations".

Following the backlash, the students clarified their position on clapping.

"Students' unions strive to make their events welcoming to all of their students by acknowledging their experiences and responding to their needs".

While Titchkosky said the vote by Manchester students is commendable, she said it's important for people with other accessibility needs to be considered, too.

"Accommodations have to continue to be imagined as being inclusive to whoever happens to be present", she said. "It's not representative of the views of the vast majority of students I've spoken to, and I don't think it's representative of the student left wing". Jazz hands should be favoured at debates, panels and talks as well as at meetings of the student senate, it said.
