The UN's top court ordered the United States Wednesday to suspend sanctions on "humanitarian" goods for Iran in a stunning setback for US President Donald Trump.
It also said the reasons cited by President Trump for re-imposing the sanctions were unfounded because the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had repeatedly confirmed that Iran was complying with the terms of the 2015 nuclear accord signed by Tehran and six world powers.
It said U.S. sanctions must not hurt medicines and medical devices; foodstuffs and agricultural commodities; or parts, equipment and services necessary for civil aviation safety.
United Nations top court rules that U.S. must comply with obligations violated by re-imposing sanctions on Iranian people when exiting #JCPOA.

Iran had lodged a complaint at the ICJ after the United States had laid down sanctions against it on May 8, 2017, and had termed the U.S. action as violative of the terms of a 1955 Treaty of Amity between the two countries.
Iran dragged the USA to the ICJ in July, and during four days of hearings in late August, its lawyers accused Washington of "strangling" its economy.
"Any dispute between the High Contracting Parties as to the interpretation or application of the present treaty, not satisfactorily adjusted by diplomacy shall be submitted to the International Court of Justice, unless the High Contracting Parties agree to settlement by some other pacific means".
"The court denied Iran's attempt to secure broad measures to interfere with USA sanctions and rightly noted Iran's history of non-compliance with its worldwide obligations under the treaty of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons", he said.
It is a provisional measure issued in response to Iran's urgent request ahead of the second round of sanctions scheduled to be reinstated next month.
The 2015 accord saw the Islamic Republic limit its controversial nuclear activities in return for relief from global sanctions.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani praised Europe on Wednesday for maintaining business with Iran after the USA withdrawal.
He then announced the US would terminate the Amity treaty which formed the basis of Iran's suit against the U.S.
The case is the second brought by Tehran against Washington since 2016. That year it brought a suit at the ICJ against the freezing of around $2 billion of Iranian assets overseas which USA courts say should go to American victims of terror attacks.
However, the U.S. ambassador in the Netherlands, Pete Hoekstra, pointed out in a tweet that the "court declined.to grant the sweeping measures requested by Iran" - after dismissing the entire case as "meritless".
The incident was a plot "designed by those who want to damage Iran's long-established relations with France and Europe ", he said. A German court said on October 1 it had approved Assadi's extradition to Belgium, where he is accused of masterminding the plot.
