Week Ahead: Kavanaugh FBI Investigation, NAFTA Deal And More

Woman who confronted Flake Abuse led to my own 'shame' Week Ahead: Kavanaugh FBI Investigation, NAFTA Deal And More
Bennie Garza | 02 October, 2018, 05:06

Though Flake received applause from numerous hundreds of spectators at the summit event on Monday, there were a smattering of boos when he said that while Ford offered "compelling, credible testimony", Kavanaugh made an "impassioned, very raw defense and rebuttal to what was going on".

The FBI is expected to interview Judge Kavanaugh and some of the women who have accused him of sexual misconduct - including Prof Ford, who testified last week to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

But Michael Avenatti, the attorney for Julie Swetnick, who has accused the judge of excessive drinking and inappropriate treatment of women in the early 1980s, among other accusations, said Saturday that his client had not been contacted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation but is willing to co-operate with investigators. Now, Mitchell is under fire after telling Republican senators that Dr. Ford's accusations are "weaker" than "a "he said, she said" case".

The FBI has not yet contacted a California professor who says Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were teenagers.

What did the classmate say about Mr Kavanaugh?

In a statement, Dr Ludington said he was "deeply troubled by what has been a blatant mischaracterisation by Brett himself of his drinking at Yale".

According to the Washington Post, who obtained Ludington's statement, Ludington witnessed a belligerently drunk Kavanaugh respond to a semi-hostile comment by throwing a beer at the commenter's face and starting a fight, ending in their mutual friend going to jail.

"I was pushed onto the bed and Brett got on top of me", she said.

Kavanaugh and Ford appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, where they answered questions about the allegations.

President Donald Trump defended his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, during a Monday press conference, calling the judge's Senate confirmation process "not fair".

Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic member of the Judiciary Committee, told CNN that she was "very concerned" by the reported White House constraints on the inquiry.

Sanders said Trump, who has vigorously defended Kavanaugh but also raised the slight possibility of withdrawing the nomination should damaging information be found, "will listen to the facts".

Questions about the scope of the FBI investigation emerged over the weekend amid reports that Senate Republicans were working with the White House to contain the number of witnesses and the allegations to be investigated.

President Trump speaks as he announces a revamped North American free trade deal and then takes questions from reporters, in the Rose Garden of the White House Monday.

Supreme Court nominations require Senate confirmation.

Flake said he would ensure it's a "real investigation", by the FBI as Democrats demanded that Trump give them a full readout of his instructions to the agency.

The FBI is spending a week looking into allegations of sexual misconduct against Mr Kavanaugh after President Trump ordered an investigation. "Whatever that means, according to the senators and the Republicans and the Republican majority, I want them to do that", he said. Jeff Flake told hundreds of young people at the Forbes Under 30 Summit.

"We don't want to go on a witch hunt, do we?"

Heitkamp, meanwhile, noted that Trump himself called for a "broader" FBI investigation into the allegations.

Trump has maintained his support for Kavanaugh, saying that "hopefully at the conclusion, everything will be fine". But Ludington said he "cringed" when he watched Kavanaugh describe his drinking on a Fox News TV interview and in testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The FBI is expected to spend the coming days investigating the sexual misconduct claims against Kavanaugh.
