Fabrizio Stabile, 29, visited the BSR Cable Park in Waco, Texas, where it's suspected he contracted the rare amoeba Naegleria fowleri, an infection so rare it's only been diagnosed 143 times in the United States since 1962.
The Waco Tribune-Herald reports Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is testing at BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort, which voluntarily closed on Friday.
Page organizer Stephanie Papastephanou wrote that while Stabile was mowing his lawn on the afternoon of Sunday September 16, he suddenly experienced a severe headache and went to lie down. He went on to develop symptoms, including brain swelling and fever, and was pronounced brain dead on September 21.
You can not be infected with Naegleria fowleri by drinking contaminated water and the amoeba is not found in salt water.
The Waco McLennan County Public Health District said that the CDC tested water at BSR and that results from the test would come out later this week.
It remains unclear when exactly Stabile visited the park, but infection symptoms from the parasite typically flare up between one and nine days after contact.
Four days after the initial symptoms appeared, Stabile's family received the devastating news that he had tested positive for Naegleria fowleri, an extremely rare brain-eating amoeba that kills 98 percent of infected persons.
The disease, according to the CDC, is nearly always fatal, with only four people out of 143 cases have survived the infection.
Stabile had used the park's wave pool while on vacation, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald. He loved snowboarding, surfing, and anything to do with friends and family. He died the next day. "BSR Surf Resort operates a state of the art artificial man-made wave".
Samples from the pool have been collected for testing, with preliminary results expected later this week.
He had a keen love for fishing, which led him to work for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Bass Pro Shops.
