Europe regained the Ryder Cup as captain Thomas Bjorn's team reached the 14.5 points they required to beat the United States at a packed Le Golf National on Sunday. Finau and partner Brooks Koepka couldn't complete their comeback, losing 2 and 1 to Europe's Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy in a fourball match Saturday at Le Golf National in Paris.

To repeat the past here, Furyk needs to count on the US core of Justin Thomas, Koepka, Woods, Johnson and Jordan Spieth, all of whom are out in the first seven matches.

Woods' Ryder Cup record dropped to 13-20-3 and 9-16-1 in team matches.

Paul Casey and Tyrell Hatton battled back from three down against Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas after seven holes only for Thomas to birdie the 15th to apply the pressure.

The reigning Masters champion endured a nightmare round on Saturday, hitting multiple balls into the water, spending much of his time in the rough, and even hitting one tee shot out of bounds and nearly into a spectator shopping area.

Players had to make putts, drives needed to stay out of the deep rough at Le Golf National and European players couldn't all put on their Ian Poulter trousers like they did in eight-straight matches from Friday morning through Saturday morning.

There was no fairytale comeback for Tiger Woods, however, on his return after missing the last two Ryder Cups as he and Patrick Reed lost 3 and 1 to Molinari and Fleetwood.

The victory moved Garcia onto 24 1/2 points at the Ryder Cup - past Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer and Billy Casper, and with only Nick Faldo on 25 ahead of him.

In the end however, the partnerships of McIlroy/Poulter and Garcia/Noren would allow the American's take their tally to 6, while Stenson/Rose and Molinari/Fleetwood brought the European's to 10 - keeping the four-point gap in place heading into the final day. He has the most losses than any player in USA history, though Tiger Woods is now only one behind after three straight defeats in France.

Friday's second session was the first time Europe had recorded a 4-0 whitewash in the foursomes, having earlier recorded a crucial win in the last of the fourballs through Fleetwood and Moliari.

"The three matches we played, they never missed a putt inside 10 to 12 feet", Woods groaned. You can see how much it means to us by Sergio's reaction; he comes into his own in this tournament. "To be able to win this thing back is even more special". "Early wins tomorrow go a long way".

McIlroy's three birdies on the front nine had helped the Europeans build their big lead.

It was Thomas's fourth point of the weekend - the best haul for an American rookie since Larry Nelson in 1979. What's going on with Bubba Watson?

They were 5 up at the turn over Woods and DeChambeau, and a brief rally only delayed the inevitable.

Paul Casey arguably delivered the standout performance of the morning, picking up birdies at five of the first six holes on the Albatros course to set the tone for his and Tyrrell Hatton's 3 and 2 defeat of Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler.

"We fought back from 2-down to get it to all-square".
