Klobuchar Grills Kavanaugh On Drinking At Nomination Hearing

Senate Judiciary Committee Senate Judiciary Committee

Klobuchar: "So you're saying there's never been a case where you drank so much that you didn't remember what happened the night before, or part of what happened?" "You talk about a nominee getting off the floor, when all we're asking for is one week for an investigation".

During the hearing, Klobuchar had said she understands alcohol abuse, as her father is an alcoholic, and asked Kavanaugh if he'd ever blacked out while drinking.

Klobuchar: Could you answer the question? Klobuchar added later that she doesn't like "living in an evidence-free zone", without testimony from contemporaries of Kavanaugh and Ford.

"You're asking about blackout, I don't know". She also asked her Republican colleagues: "What are you hiding?"

Later in the hearing, Kavanaugh apologized, but it was a back-and-forth that seemed to encapsulate the nasty tone of the hearing and clips of the judge's remarks quickly went viral on social media. During the interview period, when Kavanaugh was asked about his drinking habits, he said, "I drank beer with my friends".

"Yes we drank beer, my friends and I, boys and girls".

Klobuchar even tried to offer some empathy to Kavanaugh. "We drank beer, I like beer", Kavanaugh said.

On Friday, the White House argued that any claim Kavanaugh had said he was legally allowed to consume beer during high school is inaccurate and that he "never suggested that all of his high school drinking was of legal age", said White House spokesman Raj Shah. "It was probably the most telling moment of the whole proceeding", he said, "because in that moment, you saw the belligerence and the nastiness of a person who one could then easily imagine having participated in some of the incidents he's accused of having committed".

In his opening statement, Kavanaugh condemned the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee and repeatedly declared that his life and his family had been threatened and ruined.
