Tiger Woods ends five-year drought with Tour Championship win in Atlanta

Woods also won at East Lake in 2007, having won at Champions Golf Club in 1999.

"I believe this time Tiger Woods will be a definite asset", Europe's 2014-winning captain Paul McGinley said at the weekend.

For those watching on TV, the back nine played out like a coronation ceremony for Woods, with the gallery masses seizing every opportunity to honor the icon with much-deserved applause. "I just stuck with it out of superstition, and it worked".

"I don't have to shoot 63 or 64 and hope I get help".

After nearly a decade lost to scandal, injury and surgeries the now 42-year-old has emerged a softer version of his old self and while he has had close calls in 2018 tomorrow marks his first 54-hole lead. The crowd was wild with excitement in anticipation of the win, coming in through the ropes and walking behind him, just as it had been at his breakout win at the 1997 Masters.

The first six of those birdies came in the opening seven holes as Woods, who had been tied for the lead with Rose on seven under par, made a blistering start. Justin Rose, the newly crowned FedEx Cup Playoffs champion, embraced him in a hug.

Woods was emotional during the presentation after sealing his 80th win on the PGA Tour.

The next stop for Woods is to board a plane with the rest of his US teammates for France and the Ryder Cup. Onlookers packed three-, four- and 10-deep at the ropes, their T-shirts bearing slogans such as "The Return", and "He's Back", and "If Anyone Can", plus the familiar "Make Sunday Great Again".

"But I just think that what I've gone through and what I've dealt with, I've gotten lucky, to be honest with you".

Before Sunday's final round at the Tour Championship, Justin Rose already had won two PGA Tour events this season, earned 10 top-10 finishes and collected more than $7.7 million in prize money. "I missed that rush of going out there and trying to get a point for my team". Didn't know if I'd be able to compete at this level.

Finding a partner for Woods was always a challenge for successive USA captains for various reasons but this time, with Woods back after missing the previous two editions, there is likely to be a longer queue with their hand up than in previous years.

Woods' victory at the Tour Championship was his only title of the 2017-18 season and his first since the 2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. "It was special to see them". A series of back injuries kept him from golf and on Memorial Day in 2017, Woods was arrested for DUI near his Jupiter, Florida home after he was found asleep in his auto.

Five years and four back surgeries later, the most transcendent golfer in history was on the brink of completing his comeback and securing his 80th PGA Tour title.

"I've hit hundreds of millions of putts". He tapped in a par to win it, leaned over the hole to pluck the ball out - gingerly, so as not to tweak that back - and rose both arms into the air.
