Tornado touches down in Ottawa and Gatineau, Que., Environment Canada says

Environment Canada says one powerful EF-3 category twister ripped through Dunrobin, Ont., just west of Ottawa, before moving on to devastate the densely populated area of Gatineau, Que.

Around 60 buildings were reportedly affected in the Dunrobin area, a small community in the city of Ottawa which sustained the most serious damage.

A bedroom window was gone, as was part of their roof, their siding was buckled and the top of a spruce tree from 50 metres up the road lay at the end of their driveway. "And everyone's making sure we're OK", said Carlson, who is also a volunteer firefighter.

"We're putting the resources in, we are going to get it done", he told a sobbing woman seeking refuge at the school.

Thirty people were injured during the passage of the tornado, which occurred late Friday afternoon in an area straddling the provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

Police said a main intersection was also closed because of downed powerlines on the road.

A line of thunderstorms running from west of Ottawa and into Gatineau were expected to continue for several hours, he added.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to Twitter to urge residents in the affected areas to "stay safe, follow the instructions of first responders and check in with people who might need extra help".

Environment Canada said that at nearly the same time a second, lightly less powerful, twister touched down in the south Ottawa neighbourhood of Arlington Woods.

The roofs were torn off a school and several apartment buildings, he said, estimating about 1,500 people have been displaced.

'I have got a beer fridge that's sitting in my garage - that is the only thing that is untouched - but everything else has gone, ' Nicholson said.

He says the Greater Toronto Area saw wind gusts of up to 80 km/h.

The Ottawa Catholic School Board and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board announced citywide closures for Monday, citing power outages and extensive damage across the city.

"Throughout the weekend, our crews have worked tirelessly to get the lights back and we believe the majority of customers will have their power back by tonight", Hydro One COO Greg Kiraly said in a release. "They're working in risky conditions and, at times, are not able to start repairs until the wind weakens".

On Saturday, more than 150,000 customers were still without power following the tornado, and officials warned that it could take days to restore power to those areas hardest hit.
