The 1,000 foot area of greenery has been overrun by the sprawling web as spiders build a temporary home in order to mate.

A Western Greek beach has almost been taken over with more than 900 feet of spider webs. And even on the contrary - increased population of spiders will reduce the number bred on the island of mosquitoes.

Such an incident is not completely unheard of in Aitoliko as the phenomenon is known to be seasonal. "These spiders are not unsafe for humans, and will not cause any damage", molecular biologist Maria Chatzaki told a Greek news website. The massive blanket has been created by Tetragnatha spiders, a species known for constructing large mating nests.

Behind the phenomenon, Pergantis said, are the spiders' favorite snacks: gnats.

Molecular biologist Maria Chatzaki told Greek news website Newsit.gr: "These spiders are not unsafe for humans and will not cause any damage to the area's flora".

"A odd and unprecedented spectacle I saw tonight at Aitoliko", he captioned the photos.

The spiders are said to be mating before they die. Plus, they probably won't stick around too long. And once the temperatures drop, the gnat population will die off and so will the spiders, leaving the people of Aitoliko to reclaim their beaches.

Giannakopoulos said it appeared the spiders were gathering on the eastern side of the beach, adding there was a "huge veil" of them covering palm trees and other vegetation.
