New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has made her debut speech at the United Nations in NY - and in another first for the organisation she brought her baby along too.

Clarke and Neve showed up to the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit, where Jacinda spoke about the legacy of the late leader, who she described as being a "living embodiment of the United Nations' values".

The premier was photographed kissing and bouncing up and down daughter Neve in the main assembly hall next to partner Clarke Gayford, at a plenary meeting known as the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit, which she also addressed. Great yarn for her 21st, ' he said.

"Our focus on family-friendly policies - we'd already implemented for instance 26 weeks paid parental leave in New Zealand - so now I just had that extra strength of feeling behind that being the right thing to do", she said.

Baby Neve was a big hit at the United Nations general assembly hall on Monday, New York time.

Ardern revealed that juggling parenthood and the prime ministership had "met my expectations" but the joy she felt at Neve "had far surpassed my expectations".

Little Neve Te Aroha made her United Nations debut on Monday when her mother spoke at a peace summit in the General Assembly. Ardern said she discovered the pregnancy within a week of her election victory a year ago. "He will be going to some things, but he's primarily travelling to care for Neve", Ardern told the New Zealand Herald.

Earlier on Monday, Ardern spoke at the launch of the annual "Climate Week" event. "She's a good sleeper and we don't know whether that will mean she ends up sleeping a lot in the day rather than the night".

Her work-life balance was again questioned last month when breastfeeding baby Neve necessitated an extra flight in order for Ardern to both attend to her newborn's needs and appear at the Pacific Islands Forum in Nauru.

Ardern's fellow panellists commented on how peaceful Neve was waiting backstage with her father and Ardern joked that she "wasn't at 3:30 this morning".

"I have the ability to take my child to work, there's not many places you can do that", Ardern said, according to the Guardian.

As other reports also pointed out, The Straits Times reported Jacinda Ardern, 38, is only the second world leader to ever give birth while in the office.

"Unless there is a culture that accepts that mothers and children are part of our workplaces, then we won't change anything".
