Giant spider-web cloaks Greece coast

Kristine Garrett | 22 September, 2018, 20:25

A series of incredible photos show the edge of a lagoon blanketed in white - but it's not snow or dew, it's a 300-metre long stretch of thick spider webs made by thousands of busy arachnids.

Behind the phenomenon, Pergantis said, are the spiders' favorite snacks: gnats.

Warmer climate conditions than usual in western Greece likely triggered Tetragnatha spiders to build their large nests for mating.

The cloudy web stretches over an abandoned boat, trees and rows of vegetation in photographs published to Facebook by user Giannis Giannakopoulos.

According to arachnologist Maria Chatzaki, they're always from the same type of spider: the Tetragnatha genus, a tiny critter no longer than 2 centimeters, or 0.7 inches.

"It's as if the spiders are taking advantage of these conditions and are having a kind of a party", she told Greek media. They were presumably attracted by an increasing mosquito population in the area, the presence of water, and plenty of heat.

Maria Chatzaki, professor of molecular biology and genetics at Democritus University of Thrace, told Newsit Greece's high temperatures are creating the ideal climate for reproduction.

She assured that neither the spiders nor the cobwebs present a threat to the local community. Just when you thought you these guys could not get more invasive, they invade a whole Greek town... for a sex party. "This phenomenon has arisen from a population explosion of this spider".

"These spiders are not risky for humans, and will not cause any damage", molecular biologist Maria Chatzaki told Greek news websites.
