Trump says claim Puerto Rico hurricane killed 2,975 people is FAKE

Almost 3,000 people died in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

But after visiting the island last September, Trump said that Puerto Ricans were fortunate that the storm did not yield a catastrophe akin to the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast.

Trump said on Twitter that "they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths" at the time he visited the island after the storm.

"This was done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico", he wrote.

The Republican president suggested the hurricane death toll was artificially inflated by adding those who passed away from natural causes such as old age.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) told CBS News that the water was distributed to the central government of Puerto Rico as part of hurricane relief efforts past year.

Trump tweeted Wednesday, "We got A Pluses for our recent hurricane work in Texas and Florida (and did an unappreciated great job in Puerto Rico, even though an inaccessible island with very poor electricity and a totally incompetent Mayor of San Juan)".

CNN's Jake Tapper tweeted that Trump is "Apparently of the belief that the death toll is about him and not about approximately 3,000 dead American citizens".

"I think that Puerto Rico was an incredible unsung success", Trump said. The George Washington University report said the actual number of excess deaths was estimated to be in the range of 2,658 to 3,290.

Where does the official death toll come from?

Santana's images appear to have been taken by drone, and he accompanied them saying, "Although you do not believe it ... nearly a million boxes of water that were never delivered to the people of PR, before the emergency of Hurricane Maria".

The president, criticizing Puerto Rico for having aging infrastructure before the storm that exacerbated problems with the energy grid, added that "we've gotten a lot of receptivity, a lot of thanks for the job we've done in Puerto Rico".

The initial low death count of 64 people only took into account those who died from "structural collapse, flying debris, floods and drownings".

Cruz quickly responded, implying that the president was out of touch with what had really happened in Puerto Rico. But Trump contested these findings on Thursday.
