Florence Shifts, Taking Southerly Route Closer To Charlotte

Kristine Garrett | 13 September, 2018, 09:58

More than 1.5 million people have been ordered to evacuate coastal areas ahead of the storm because of both destructive winds and a storm surge that could place normally dry land under at least 10 feet of water. They were expecting to be in SC for 10 to 14 days, according to a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Pete Piringer.

Past history suggests this might prove disastrous.

When the National Hurricane Updates shared a map of the category four hurricane, dubbed "the storm of a lifetime", on Facebook, people were quick to compare the pink round-headed shape displaying the devastation to something a lot less serious. Prisoners who outlasted Hurricane Irma described cells covered in mold, urine, and feces, and prison guards spoke out about the horrors of conditions.

It's the latest advisory - albeit from a different perspective - that residents from Maryland to Georgia should be prepared for a unsafe storm.

Despite the potentially devastating hurricane being downgraded to category two on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, the governor of Georgia has joined his counterparts in Virginia and the Carolinas in declaring a state of emergency.

More than 1.7 million people were warned to evacuate and get out of the way of the "life-threatening" storm's path.

Florence became a unsafe Category 3 hurricane Wednesday afternoon before it downgraded to a Category 2 Wednesday night with winds at 110mph.

"Today's the day", Jeff Byard of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Wednesday.

The official track has Florence hovering off the southern North Carolina coast from Thursday night until landfall Saturday morning or so, then veering south through SC and Georgia into Monday.

Hurricane hunter aircraft also fly through the storm, taking data on wind speed to figure out exactly how intense Florence is at any given moment.

More than 10 million people are in the crosshairs of Hurricane Florence as storm force winds move within hours of battering the United States east coast.

"There's really not a lot of good news", NOAA flight director Paul Flaherty said on "Shepard Smith Reporting".

"We are uniquely positioned to establish a quick ad-hoc supply chain to support relief efforts", said Bettina Stix, an Amazon veteran credited with developing DRbA.

The storm, which is building up over the Atlantic, is due to make landfall in either North or SC within the next few days, and is expected to be the worst storm to hit the area in 30 years. Forecasters worry the storm's damage will be worse if it lingers on the coast.
