Luke Shaw's injury curse struck again on Saturday as the Manchester United left back's England recall was cut short by a sickening clash of heads early in the second half against Spain.

The United full-back tweeted: "Thank you for all the love and support".

The left-back needed significant medical attention on the pitch before eventually being carried off on a stretcher.

Southgate's side kicked off their Uefa Nations League campaign with a frustrating 2-1 defeat at Wembley on Saturday but concerns over their 23-year-old leftback's well-being overshadowed the result.

England coach Gareth Southgate says the defender will follow concussion protocols and be inactive for seven days "but he should be back in the fold as soon as that's done". "We'll have to assess him a bit more, but that's definitely a good sign".

"We'll go through some tests. I don't want a contract because maybe in the next year or so I'm a free agent, so maybe they might look to tie me down for that", he added.

On Shaw's overall display as he won a first worldwide cap for 18 months, the England manager added: "It's great contribution for the goal and it's a big thing".

Manchester United defender Shaw was enjoying being back involved with the England squad after an impressive start to the new Premier League season.

The pair could make their senior bows on home turf this Tuesday as the King Power Stadium plays host to the Three Lions' friendly against Switzerland.

"He's had a minor strain, but I think he should be fine for his club this weekend", Southgate said.

Shaw has faced some serious injury problems in the past, have once broken his in two places during a Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven in the 2014-15 season.
