Nike believes that the campaign will create more business than it loses.

Due to his involvement in the widespread movement - which gained even more traction after Donald Trump called players who "disrespect" the U.S. flag "sons of bitches" and asked for them to be sacked - Kaepernick has remained a free agent since opting out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017.

Kaepernick's deal with Nike for the 30th anniversary of the "Just Do It" campaign was the most polarizing issue in sports this week, prompting heated debate on several topics including athletes protesting social injustice and Nike wading into political waters.

Kaepernick says: "Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything". Kaepernick has sued the NFL, saying that the league is conspiring to keep him out due to his previous protests.

The endorsement deal between Nike and Kaepernick has unsurprisingly proven controversial, prompting some to call for a boycott of the company's products.

Kaepernick made the decision to kneel during the national anthem at NFL games in 2016 to highlight police brutality and racial inequality in the US.

According to research analyst Edison Trends, the risk the US sportswear giant took after featuring Kaepernick who has been in the spotlight for his protests during the games national anthem' has paid off.

Shares of Nike tumbled early Tuesday on worries the sport goods giant's new marketing campaign around Colin Kaepernick could harm sales.

The story is a bit different in Robinhood however. "A total of 15,191 investors added Nike to their portfolios on Robinhood this week, up 45% from last week". From 57th the previous week, Nike climbed to the 37th spot as the most popular stock on the brokerage app.

This comes as no surprise.

The company did not immediately respond to CNN requests for comment.

Nike stock is also up 53 percent over the last year, and 135 percent over the last 5 years.
