Koh said that his company doesn't just want this device to function like any other tablet when unfolded, but want to introduce applications and capabilities that will differentiate it from other smartphones. He also hinted that the "unfolded" mode will provide benefits that go beyond having a tablet-sized screen, but didn't elaborate on what these benefits might be.

Here he wonders why a consumer would buy it if the unfolded experience is the same as a tablet. "So when the end customer uses it, (they think) 'wow, this is the reason Samsung made it, '" he added.

Samsung is reportedly working on a smartphone with four cameras that it plans to launch this year. The flawless foldable phone would have a single display that can fold. Samsung's foldable smartphone will sport a book-like form factor with a vertically foldable display on the inside. He said the "complicated" development process is "nearly concluded".

Samsung will release a foldable smartphone this year, DJ Koh, CEO of the company's mobile division told CNBC.

On the one hand Samsung is preparing for the Galaxy X launch in November. The handset is relied upon to cost $1500 at dispatch and could strengthen Samsung's cell phone solid footing, which contracted by multi year-on-year from 2017. That seems to suggest that when folded, users will have access to at least a portion of the screen, perhaps similar to current Always-On type displays but not so limited in functionality. Many consumers turn to midrange phones looking for a good compromise on specs and price.

Samsung is likely to focus on creating an actual screen that bends instead of using old-school flip phones' hinge.

This news was confirmed by DJ Koh, Samsung's president of mobile communications, during an interview with CNBC at IFA.

Huawei, meanwhile, will unveil the Mate 20 series in October, and the Chinese smartphone maker might announce the foldable handset during its next press conference. The South Korean company has recently released devices with great features but we could soon see something we haven't seen before.
