JD.com's shares have plummeted since Minnesota police arrested the 45-year-old Liu on Friday for an alleged rape.

The billionaire's lawyers deny any wrongdoing and have told the press that they are confident their client will not face charges, pointing out that police did not seize his passport.

Liu returned to China following his release and showed up at JD.com's Beijing headquarters on Tuesday morning to sign a strategic partnership with Chinese textile manufacturer Ruyi Group.

The chief executive of China's JD.com, Liu Qiangdong, was arrested last week on suspicion of rape, according to a USA police report. The Minneapolis police report did not provide details of the alleged incident leading to Friday's arrest.

A Chinese e-commerce giant says its billionaire founder, Liu Qiangdong, has returned to China after his arrest in the US on suspicion of criminal sexual conduct.

JD.com, the company which Liu founded in 1998, is an e-commerce juggernaut in China and the main competitor to industry leader Alibaba.

Originally, police had said that Liu was arrested on suspicion of "criminal sexual conduct", a broad term which could include a number of different forms of unwanted contact.

The Journal said authorities in Minnesota are investigating a complaint against Liu by a female student from China.

Liu appeared at an event in Beijing on Tuesday for JD.com, and his attorney, Earl Gray, an attorney for Liu, doesn't expect Liu to face charges.

Chuck Laszewski, a spokesman for the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, said prosecutors are awaiting the case file before making any decision about potential charges.

A spokeswoman for the University of Minnesota said Liu, who is enrolled as a student with the Carlson School of Management's doctor of business administration China program, was in Minneapolis to attend a weeklong residency, from August 26 to September 1.

In an earlier statement posted to Chinese social media network Weibo, JD.com described the allegations as false.

Shares in China's second largest e-commerce company closed down 6 per cent at $29.43 on Tuesday on the Nasdaq and were steady after hours.

Liu's name was also caught up in a sexual misconduct trial in 2015, though he was not the defendant, according to Reuters.

Mr Liu has a net worth of $7.5bn now (£5.8 bn), according to Forbes. If charged and convicted, Liu could be sentenced to 30 years in prison. The case involved a guest at a party Liu hosted at his home in Sydney who accused another guest of sexually assault.
